Dear Community,
I hope you all are well! Spring has arrived a little early here and it is starting to warm up. I’m very thankful!
Check out all the updates below. There is a lot cooking. One topic that is relevant to our work and one that I spend way too much time thinking about is problem solving. Check out my post here, titled “Breaking Out of Mental Prison [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/GlensNookCommunity_547/BreakingOutoftheMentalPrison_347668/]” if interested in the details.
High level, we believe that the problem is the path. A plan is good and necessary, but it never quite maps to reality because reality is much more complicated than any plan we can make. The problem is the path approach makes this simple by saying simply solve the next biggest problem in front of you. And then that is how the path unfolds before you.
We have all been solving tens - maybe 100s - of thousands of problems on 7 Cups. These monthly reports, in some ways, are like a reporting to all of you about the problems we’ve solved. A big thank you to each of us for helping us identify and solve problems. Those efforts have been key to our growth.
Thank you!

This month, we worked on launching a fixed Growth Path builder. Growth paths on 7 Cups are a great feature which allow therapeutic learning and practices with only a few steps every day. The builder allows us all to build new paths and share our collective knowledge and experience. You can learn about how you can get involved here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/SoulfullyAButterflysContentGarden_2136/TheGrowthPathBuilderisBack_347617/].

Breaking Out of the Mental Prison

Occasionally, we might find ourselves trapped in a cycle of repeated mistakes or challenges. This can create a feeling of confinement, as if negative emotions are inescapable – a kind of mental or emotional prison.
If you're interested in exploring this theme further, consider watching the movie "The Shawshank Redemption." It's highly rated [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/], but be prepared for some intense scenes.
While prison break movies are entertaining, being the imprisoned character wouldn't be. The path to freedom in these films is often slow, methodical, and reliant on luck. The characters face numerous obstacles that can take years to overcome before they finally achieve liberation. They have to solve a lot of problems to break free.
Inadvertently, I've transformed into a problem connoisseur—someone who deeply values and understands problems and the process of finding solutions.
I engaged in numerous problem-solving activities growing up to support my family. Later, I founded a couple of startups, which are essentially group problem-solving endeavors. Progress is directly proportional to the number of problems solved. Similarly, 7 Cups functions as a collective problem-solving platform. The more problems we solve, the more individuals we assist, and the stronger we grow.
It seems counter-intuitive, but the fastest way to get out of mental prison is to solve the next biggest problem in front of you.
Problems are much stronger than we give them credit for. They are not simply to be avoided; solving them is beneficial to our growth. Problems indicate a lack of understanding or awareness, and they are difficult because we don't know how to solve them. They highlight what we are missing or what we don't quite understand about life. In a way, they are a form of gentle mercy. If ignored, however, they can quickly become more severe. As Oprah said, "first the universe knocks and then it yells” or “small difficulties help us avoid big difficulties.”
I try to prioritize listening to early signals and indications that something might be amiss. When I notice these signals, I try to understand their message. As Jung suggested, symptoms often hold the key to deeper issues. Instead of dismissing our symptoms, we should strive to decode their important messages.
When you solve a problem, your understanding and awareness increase. You learn and grow, expanding your consciousness and developing new skills. With these new skills, you are better equipped to help others who face similar challenges.
Many of us come from families with a lot of challenges. We can inherit these problems in the form of epigenetics [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epigenetics] (generational trauma is a related idea). We don’t need to get too into the details, but the gist of it is that if our parents and their parents and so on don’t solve their challenges, then they can be passed down to us. If we don’t solve them, then they can be passed along to our children. This is yet another reason to try to solve as many problems as you can so you can be healthy, strong, and set up anyone depending upon you to also thrive.
Think of a mental prison as having a door. The more problems you solve, the less time you have to stay in the prison. If you solve a lot of problems, then you might just be stuck in there for a bit as you puzzle out how to solve the current problem. Once you solve it, you are free to leave. If you don’t solve problems, then it might feel like you are in there all the time. @hope shared a quote: “'The irony of avoiding discomfort is that everything ends up feeling uncomfortable. No one is more uncomfortable than the person who avoids all discomfort.”
It is important to note that not all problems are solvable. Sometimes they are just way too difficult or complex. Other times, the timing just isn’t right - meaning that there might not be enough information available. When that new information does become available, then you can solve the problem. The key is to focus on the problems you can solve.
Here are the stages I’ve gone through in life.
1. I don’t like this problem. I wish it would just go away.
2. This problem is causing me more pain and further restricting my life (prison)
3. Okay I need to solve this problem to get some freedom here.
4. Ohh, interesting, solving that problem gave me a new skill or insight that I wasn’t expecting.
5. Okay, cool, solving these problems helps me help others solve their problems.
6. I still don’t love problem solving, especially unexpected problems that surprise me.
7. Hmm, even these unexpected problems are good.
8. Woah, problems are actually really helpful.
9. The more problems I solve the more aware, free, and conscious I become.
10. Actively trying to see problems as good because I know they will help me grow and learn how to better help others.
One title for this post was going to be Advanced Resiliency Medicine (ARM💪) The core idea was looking at life’s problems as holding a secret message. The secret message is hidden in the people and circumstances in the challenge. The message has to be decoded in order to unlock the Advanced Resilience, Medicine (ARM💪) it holds. The ARM is what heals and strengthens you, preparing you for the next challenge.
*
Advanced - because personalized or tailored to your unique skills and level in life.
*
Resiliency - because it breaks you down where you are weak to expose bad assumptions.
*
Medicine - because it heals you and allows you to use the energy that was previously hurting you prior to solving the challenge.
The key point is that problems get a bad wrap. They are holding secret information that is tailored just for us. When we solve them we heal and get smarter - more aware/conscious/insightful - and we are then better able to help others.
All of the above is on an individual level, but the same thing happens on a group/community/collective level as well. Our community is made up of people. When we solve our own problems, we become better at helping others. When this happens across an entire community, all of the people in the community - and the community as a whole - gets much smarter and more aware and able to solve problems. We grow as individuals when we solve problems and we grow as a community when we solve problems.
Try this activity to understand the problem solving process while applying it in real time:
*
Identify the Problem: Recognize how the problem is affecting your life. Stick to facts.
*
Define Goals: Decide what you want to achieve. Be specific
*
Brainstorm Solutions: Come up with different strategies - there are no right or wrong answers and you can be as creative as you like
*
Evaluate Your Options: What are the pros and cons of each solution?
*
Make a Plan: Choose the best/easiest solution to follow
*
Follow Through: Commit to trying the selected solution for X time, at least 1-2 weeks.
*
Review and Adjust: What did you learn? Regularly assess how the solution went for you and make any adjustments - you can also pick alternative solutions to test the process with once again.
Please share any thoughts, comments, and reflections below. We will also be adding a new focus on problem solving with a couple of groups / discussions focused on it in the not too distant future.
Also, if you have a challenge and you’d like help thinking through how to solve it, then please post here and we’ll help. Or, if you are already working on a problem and just want some encouragement, then know we are here for you and will cheer you on!

Regional, State, Country Surveys?

Quick question for you all:
We released our Local section a few months ago: 7cups.com/local. Part of this directory includes the top 50 mental health challenges in each region. I was talking with a couple of friends that were trying to find ways to create positive mental health change through organized campaigns. One idea they had one was a sort of regular poll or survey that would be tied to states or countries.
Members and listeners would be able to ask their own questions. We would also ask questions. The goal would be to try to figure out bottom-up and top-down what the main mental health challenges are in each region. Once we identified those challenges, we could then help start to solve them both online - on 7 Cups - and offline through working with local partners.
The data from the surveys would be published on the local pages for each country and state.
Any reactions to this idea?
We don't want to do it if there isn't organic interest in it. I'm not wedded to it either way. Open and honest feedback very welcome!

Dear Community,
I hope all is well! It has finally started to warm up here and I’m delighted.
Things have been hopping over here. One recent focus has been on how we can do more to bridge online and offline care via 7cups.com/local [http://7cups.com/local]. It is still in process and will likely take a while to figure out, but look for more on this front in the future. We’ve also been working on a number of grant applications to provide additional support to folks around the world. Last, we did a big overhaul of 7cups.com/qa [http://7cups.com/qa]. Thank you all for asking and answering important questions!
I’ll write more on this in an upcoming post, but I wanted to share an idea I’ve been meditating on. The brief version, beautiful things often take a long time to develop. We are collectively building something beautiful here. It has already been 11 years. I can tell you, what we are doing becomes more interesting, detailed, layered, textured and beautiful each and every year. More to come on this…
I appreciate you all. Thank you for helping us build 7 Cups brick by brick. We are making good progress!

It has been a hectic start to the year for us, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed introducing new systems to help further develop the forum space.
First of all, our 2024 forum statistics [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/EventsDiscussions_2666/ForumUnwrapped2024Statistics_344129/] were a big hit! This inspired us to make some tweaks to our monthly spotlight thread [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/EventsDiscussions_2666/Changestoour2025forumspotlights_344373/]. These updates will help recognise the efforts of all contributors and will provide you with regular forum statistics.

We have also started to build and expand on our newest community. Men’s Issues [https://www.7cups.com/forum/men/] is now available for your use and you can sign up to the taglist here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/men/CommunitySpace_2680/MensIssuesAutomatedTaglist_344389/] so you don’t miss out on any upcoming events or discussions relating to this topic.
Finally, we’re always on the look out for new forum leaders. Dear Community,
Wishing you all a wonderful reflection time for 2024 and much hope, clarity, and love for 2025!
I have been very encouraged by many of you. Thank you for your kindness, optimism, and compassion. One real strength in our community is the amount of help available. It can feel a little unnatural to lean on others when we need help, but, over time, we gradually learn that it is okay to lean on others and indeed even good. We know that providing help is rewarding, sometimes even more rewarding than receiving help.
Life throws a lot of curve balls at us. No doubt, all of us have had some thrown our way in 2024. I hope that people in our community were there to help you. Many of you were there to help me. Going into 2025, let’s try to normalize even further that it is good to ask for help. Life is complicated and challenging. As the proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
I’m looking very forward to walking alongside you all in 2025. We have a long ways to go!
Happy New Year!
H
Happy New Year, everyone!
Every January I do some tidying and sprucing up in the forums, and I have started with a renewed contacts post (check it out here) [https://www.7cups.com/forum/safe7cups/Part3InformationResoucesUpdatesStation_1371/WhotoContactEmailsFormsandAdmins2025_343392/]. If you’re out in the forums and you notice outdated information in your travels, I encourage you to let CheeryMango, Tommy or the OP (opening poster) know so we can keep our forums current!
With the new year comes new ambitions, and we love to support our lovely volunteers looking to step up their game to develop their skills and serve the community in the process (win-win!). I have created a space for anyone interested in pursuing leadership opportunities to come share and be supported! Listeners and members alike may take part! It doesn’t matter how big or small. Come share (and you might even find goals buddies) here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/HsHangout_1970/TaketheLeadershipNewYearsGoalsChallenge_343396/].
Last month I introduced a brand new intervention called the Transformation Wheel. [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/General_2444/IntroducingtheTransformationWheelInvitationtoJoin_342256/] If you’ve been following along, you know it’s a powerful tool I’ve been using to tackle personal challenges and break free from negative cycles and it’s been transformative. I was feeling an 8/10 on the distress scale and after 4 weeks of exploration and investment, the issue has dropped to a manageable 2/10. But I am just one of a handful of accounts so far. To measure just how effective this tool is, I need more perspectives. I am inviting you to take the wheel!
As a tester, you’ll play a key role in helping strengthen this intervention by giving us feedback on how effective the process was for you and any ideas for improving it.
And as a thank-you, you’ll be rewarded with the Wellness Warrior badge. Be sure to read the enclosed links to understand how the wheel should work for you via this form [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc8R8vyQHTweyA20lEg3lCeIHuyhq1ZSLsb4nVczUtqL5-nlg/viewform] and sign up!
I look forward to seeing you all thrive - there’s magic in the number 2025. Let’s make it our year for great opportunities, positivity, and success.

The Care Team had a wonderful holiday and we are so excited to start the New Year with continued love for the community. We are excited for upcoming events, so keep an eye out for them! We have onboarded two new Guides, @radiantUnicorn3506 and @AuroraAstral and are so excited to see all the wonderful work they will accomplish! If you are interested in joining Care Team, you can message @LittleBirdie30 and @SnowTabby for more information. Happy New Year everyone!!
Our Listener Check-in games have been held a couple of times in December with wonderful results, it has shown us that our listeners use the information that they've been given as well as the resources. Anna onboarded @Remina and @AuroraAstral as PAs who have been putting in the work and done so brilliantly.

As 2024 comes to a close, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for each and every one of you. I’m truly honored to work alongside such incredible listeners, members, and leaders.
This year, especially in Q4, has been filled with amazing events, impactful conversations, and a sense of connection that only this community can create. None of it would have been possible without your energy, enthusiasm, and dedication. You’ve made the forums a safe and welcoming space where everyone can feel heard and supported.
As we look ahead to 2025, I’m excited for all the possibilities and growth that await us. May this new year bring you joy, peace, and success in all your endeavors. Together, I know we’ll continue to build an even stronger, more compassionate community.
Thank you for making 7 Cups such a special place. Here’s to an incredible 2025!

Dear Community
I enjoyed celebrating Cupsgiving with all of you! A big thank you to all the people that cooked the meals, shared the pies/cookies, and took part in all of the programming. It was great to read the forum posts highlighting the impact of gratitude and generosity!
The big news in our world is that we released our local support systems. This is version 1 of us working to bridge online care with offline care. Many people come to 7 Cups looking for help on the ground - they might need access to a food pantry, a shelter, a therapist, a treatment center, or a faith organization. We often make referrals to these places, but we can now do it in a more deliberate manner.
Also, you’ll notice if you click here: 7cups.com/local [http://7cups.com/local], you’ll see that we have the beginnings of a parallel mental health system for each country (and many states in the US). We are highlighting the number of people we’ve helped, the number of listeners, and the top 50 mental health issues for each state or country. We hope that these pages become hubs for local support resources so that people can get better help. Feedback and ideas on how we could make this better are very welcome!
Last, we are also working on a simple but powerful intervention we are calling the transformation wheel. I’ve asked the team and ambassadors to help me strengthen it before I share it more broadly. Look for more on this in the next week or two.
With gratitude,
GlenM

Happy Cupsgiving! I hope you’ve been enjoying all the gratitude events our wonderful community has put on. There’s plenty more to look forward to with Cupsmas so keep your eyes out for announcements, and I am excited to be out there celebrating with you!
Speaking of gratitude, our caring community is at work each day supporting and uplifting each other through various acts of compassion. Listeners, leaders, and members alike - it could be anyone making a difference through little acts of kindness. I rolled out a recognition activity to catch these moments and tag them! This is community-wide and runs through the end of the year so bookmark/subscribe to this post (Caught You Kind) [https://www.7cups.com/forum/projectsandevents/CommunityActivitiesEvents_1908/JoinOurCaughtYouKindRecognitionCampaign_340430/] and let someone know you see them!
The Welcome Committee has been a smashing success! Since its launch in July, our team has welcomed over 19,000+ new members! That's a staggering number, representing 19,000+ unique personal messages. But more importantly, these outreaches have created a vital bridge between newcomers and the 7 Cups community. By reaching out personally, Welcome Committee members are helping our new members feel seen, supported, and equipped to navigate the platform. This warm welcome makes acclimating to 7 Cups a smoother experience, encouraging them to participate and benefit from all the amazing resources and connections available.

Dear Community,
November is here already! The fall flies by for me. My big kids (now in college as sophomores) are coming home for Thanksgiving. I can’t wait to see them and hang out. I’m also looking forward to Cupsgiving with all of you! @ASilentObserver has been sharing a little bit of the plans here and there with us.
I have one update that I haven’t shared much about yet. It has been on my to do list for weeks and I need to write an article, but here is a brief summary: Noni is now performing at a fair level on the Session Rating Scale [https://greenspacehealth.com/en-us/session-rating-scale-srs/#:~:text=Each%20line%20indicates%20a%20scale,SRS%20cut-off%20is%2036.]. This is actually a remarkable accomplishment.
And, here is the bigger and better insight, which most all of you predicted. Even though we now have a bot that is doing great, people still VASTLY prefer talking with a human. And it isn’t even close. The idea of mattering to another person is likely a hugely therapeutic ingredient. We’ve known this, but this spells it out even more. @healingtalk shared the insight that AI is like decaf and a human is like caffeinated coffee. I thought that was a good way of capturing it.
I still believe that AI is important and plays a role both in Noni form and also in Just-In-Time-Training, but as we’ve said many times. Listeners - human to human connection - is primary.
Last, a big thanks to all of you for celebrating with us! If you haven’t seen it yet, check out our award video here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgL5UERnQ4U&ab_channel=7Cups] and as my kids would say “smash that like button!”
With gratitude,
Glen

The Member Welcome Committee continues to scale efforts to connect with newcomers around the clock. In our 4 months of activity, we’ve PMed over 15000 newbies! We need more help in different timezones so if you’re a Verified Listener who wants to make a big impact in our community, I would love to have you on our team. October was World Mental Health Awareness Month and Group Support hosted several sessions. Heather & I were reflecting the other day on how group support organized events every month this year and after a long time, we are close to organizing events throughout the year. It is a nice small progress and win for Group Support and the credits for making it possible go to every person who participated and empowered each other in the group support. I look forward to having more awesome events in the upcoming months and years in collaboration with the community. T h a n k Y o u!!
In the other news, we relaunched the Project Group Support Buddy [https://www.7cups.com/forum/groupmod/GroupSupportTeam_2152/RelaunchProjectGroupSupportBuddy30_339047/]. It is the third version of the program and so far the simplified version. Thank you to all leaders and buddies for coming together to make this version possible. The goal of the project is to help all group support leaders feel more closely connected to the group support team and equipped in their roles to support the community and each other.

Dear Community,
How is it that October is already here?! The fall always seems to fly by for me.
I have been thinking about our community a lot. It was spurred by our response to winning the leadership excellence award [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/GlensNookCommunity_547/LeadershipAwardforExcellenceinMentalHealth_337317/]. I could feel our collective pride in winning it. Like, hey we are working hard and doing a good job here and some experts noticed!
We’ve been quietly at work in our corner of the Internet. Laying down one brick after another. Leaning in when someone is struggling. Lifting them up and in turn being lifted up when we are struggling. Brick by brick we are building a safe haven. The old saying ‘Actions speak louder than words’ keeps cropping up in my thinking. We are not big talkers, we are big doers. We show up, roll up our sleeves, and get to work.
And I think that is what people feel / sense about us when they join our community. It is our collective essence or the animating spirit that drives us forward. You can see it in our values, you can see it in the thousands of people listened to each day, or a forum post, but underlying all of these expressions is a strong community filled with compassion. The behaviors are an expression of that heart.
I’m still working on finding the right words to point to what I’m trying to articulate here. It is a bit slippery. I hope you get the sense of where I’m pointing to or what I’m trying to highlight.
More clearly, I’m incredibly proud of all of you and the work we’ve done. We have collectively built a great culture that brings healing and growth to millions. How beautiful! And shout out to @evelynerose for 11 years of dedicated service to our community!
H

And, lastly, I appreciate all the participants for their support and empowerment in the Loneliness Guided Discussions. Loneliness Support Chat is open for support every Monday and Tuesday.
