Evolution of Values: Embracing Change
by SoulfullyAButterfly
Last post
Friday
...See more Values are fundamental beliefs and principles that guide our attitudes, behaviors, and decision-making. They play a crucial role in shaping our identities and influencing the way we interact with the world. It's fascinating how these values can transform throughout our lives due to a variety of factors. Life experiences often serve as catalysts for changes in our values. These experiences can be both positive and negative. For instance, personal achievements, such as landing a dream job or achieving a long-term goal, can lead to a greater emphasis on values like ambition or perseverance. On the other hand, facing adversity, loss, or hardship can prompt a reevaluation of values, placing greater importance on qualities like resilience, empathy, or compassion. Cultural exposure and diversity also contribute to the evolution of our values. Interacting with people from different backgrounds and belief systems can broaden our perspectives and lead to a deeper appreciation for values like tolerance, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity. Moreover, as we progress through various life stages, such as adolescence, adulthood, or parenthood, our priorities and values often shift to align with our evolving responsibilities and personal growth. Think of a value that you have now that you did not used to have, or one that has become more important to you. What life experiences led to this value changing? How does this change affect you now? Please share your thoughts and experiences on how your values have evolved. Reflecting on the evolution of our values can help us embrace change while cultivating the Being (Relationship to Self) Dimension of the Inner Developmental Goals.

...See more The Inner Development Goals (IDG) framework helps individuals improve self-awareness, empathy, and positive action. It focuses on areas like sustainable living, emotional intelligence, nonviolent communication, and collaboration, all aimed at creating a fulfilling life. Key objectives of the IDG course include: * Developing self-awareness: Understanding how values, beliefs, and emotions impact decisions. * Practicing nonviolent communication (NVC): Learning to express and listen with empathy. * Building emotional intelligence: Managing emotions and strengthening relationships. * Fostering collaboration: Working effectively with others and resolving conflicts positively. * Setting sustainable goals: Aligning personal growth with societal and environmental values. The course encourages reflection on personal development and how we can contribute to both individual and collective growth. Acting to Enable Change: A Simple Guide Positive change begins with action. It requires effort, planning, and persistence. Here’s how to enable change: * Recognize the Need for Change: Identify areas of life that could be improved, whether personal growth or broader societal goals. * Set Clear, Achievable Goals: Define specific, realistic goals that align with your values to stay focused and motivated. * Take Action with Integrity: Act based on your values and stay consistent, even when challenges arise. Adapt as needed. * Overcome Obstacles and Stay Resilient: Embrace setbacks as learning opportunities and keep pushing forward with a positive mindset. * Collaborate and Support Others: Work with like-minded people to amplify the impact of your actions and support one another. * Reflect and Adjust: Regularly check your progress, adjust your approach, and continue learning. * Make Change Last: Turn new habits into routines, celebrate small wins, and regularly track your progress to make lasting change. Overcoming Obstacles and Staying Resilient Along the way, we’ll face challenges. Maybe things don’t go as expected, or we get discouraged. That’s okay! Resilience is about bouncing back after setbacks, learning from mistakes, and keeping going. The key is to stay positive, keep believing in your ability to change, and remember that every step forward counts, even if it feels small. I want to know everyone else opinion on  How can we shift our mindset to view setbacks not as failures, but as valuable learning opportunities that help us grow? What are some practical strategies we can use to stay positive and motivated when facing challenges that seem overwhelming?

...See more I recently took the IDG course and all the tips in it seemed so obvious and made sense. If there is something going on in our life we need to ACT to change it or even to let it continue to happen. You are in a good financial, emotional, physical situation ? you need to continue to do what you are doing in order to maintain the good situation. Similarly, if you are in a bad situation you need to work towards changing your situation. Easy right ? But no. When things go against you no matter how hard you try, it feels like everything is going against you. All your plans flop, and your actions don't have the outcomes that you expect. Let me know your thoughts on this. Is it really that simple to Act or is it the most difficult thing to do ? Especially with integrity, value and character.

...See more SDG Goals and the Incentive for More Care Leavers to Join Education The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a framework for global progress, with Goal 4 focusing on quality education. This goal aims to ensure inclusive and equitable education for all, which is particularly relevant for care leavers. Care leavers often face significant barriers to education, including lack of support, financial difficulties, and emotional challenges due to their experiences. To incentivize more care leavers to join education, it's crucial to address these barriers and create a supportive environment. This can be achieved through: Financial assistance: Awareness of scholarships, bursaries, and grants to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and other educational costs. Mentorship programs: Pairing care leavers with mentors who can provide guidance, support, and encouragement throughout their educational journey. Tailored support services:Offering specialized academic, emotional, and social support services to address the unique needs of care leavers. Awareness campaigns:Raising awareness about the importance of education for care leavers and highlighting success stories to inspire others. My Work Through 7 Cups and Student Minds Through my work with 7 Cups and Student Minds, I have gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by young people, including care leavers, in accessing and succeeding in education. I have: *   Provided emotional support and active listening to individuals struggling with academic stress, anxiety, and social isolation. *   Facilitated peer support groups where students can connect with others who have similar experiences and share coping strategies. *   Developed and delivered workshops on mental health awareness, resilience, and self-care for students. *   Collaborated with educational institutions to promote mental health and well-being initiatives on campus. By combining my understanding of the SDGs with my experience in supporting young people's mental health and well-being, I can contribute to creating a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for care leavers. This includes advocating for policies that address their specific needs, raising awareness about their challenges, and providing direct support through mentoring and peer support programs. Ultimately, by working together, we can ensure that care leavers have the opportunity to reach their full potential through education and contribute to building a more sustainable and equitable society. https://youtu.be/z-GgiHvY1bM?si=-3a4AudfmPgeE82X

Empowering Futures : A campaign for Educational Equity for Care Leavers

...See more My inner compass, guided by a deep sense of social justice, aligns strongly with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on quality education (SDG 4) and reducing inequalities (SDG 10). Campaigning with Student Minds to improve the experiences of care leavers in education resonates deeply with this compass. Care leavers, often facing significant systemic disadvantages, embody the very inequalities the SDGs seek to address. Supporting them in their educational journeys isn't just about access; it's about fostering a nurturing environment where their unique needs are understood and met, enabling them to thrive and reach their full potential. This work feels intrinsically right, a true north on my compass, as it directly challenges the barriers these young people face and empowers them to build brighter futures, contributing to a more equitable and just society, a world closer to the vision of the SDGs.

...See more courage and optimism and creativity and perseverance, each of these qualities helps us acquire true agency and  help us break old patterns and create new habits and be able to face challenges for example being courageous tend to get us out from our comfort zone to the world and be able to stand up for values, making decisions also taking decisive actions. As for optimism it's the ability to sustain and communicate a sense of hope always have a positive attitude and confidence in the possibility of meaningful change. let's talk now about creativity and what i learned that creativity tend to be with people who have mental illness and i think that's fascinating and it is the ability to create and innovate  new things and lastly is perseverance and it is the ability to sustain engagement and remain determined and patient even when efforts take a long time to realize it. So to summarize i think that most important thing is optimism because it can built resilience and it teaches you to look to hardships as opportunities and once you look at your problems as learning tools you find yourself less stressed and happier as Michael J. fox said “Optimism and hope relate to how we think and feel about the future. If we do believe that things will work out for the best, all the setbacks become easier to deal with,”

...See more Perseverance is important in driving change. When trying to reach our goals, there will be successes but there will also be failures. Being able to overcome these failures is an integral part of achieving success.  A time in my life where I showed perseverance was when I needed to study for midterms and finals. I was completely burnt out and did not want to keep studying but I persevered. I kept going and successfully passed my midterms.  In the future, I can set rewards incrementally for myself so it can motivate me to continue reaching my goals. Where have you shown perseverance in your life? How can you ensure that you will persevere in the future?

Courage: A Valuable Skill

...See more Courage requires the willingness to take a stance on a particular position, and the tenacity not to give up in the face of discomfort. Emotional courage can be practiced and cultivated like any action-oriented skill. Personal values may serve as a foundation for emotional courage, upon which purposeful action may be developed. Those who struggle with feeling courageous might find that a period of self-reflection on their most important values can be used to identify what goals align best with their intention and purpose.  Courage takes some grit, and a little bit of confidence that one's efforts will yield desirable results. One way of building more confidence is to seek support in others. Surrounding oneself with positive people who believe in them can make the difference between the ability to stand strong, or to fall short, when faced with challenges that need courageous attention. Displaying courage by taking a stand for oneself, or for others, in accordance with their core values can contribute to a person's sense of overall efficacy in the world, and employing assertive communication styles (being clear and firm) can positively impact a person's self-esteem.  Developing courage is a learnable behavior that can be strengthened through practice and applied focus. Discussion Questions: * Who is the most courageous person you know, and what have they done that has impacted you personally? * Has there ever been a time where you took a risk that required courage, but it didn't pay off? If yes, what did you do regain your confidence?

Perseverance: When to give up
by Meloverse

...See more Perseverance has always been an interesting quality that many people praise others for having.  It is defined as the ability to continue pushing forward towards your goal even when progress is slow or when obstacles are thrown in your way.  It can lead to great accomplishments, like earning a degree or overcoming a personal struggle.  However, perseverance towards a harmful goal can become destructive, hurting yourself and others along the way.  I see this play out most often with my mom.  I have to admit that I do not have the perseverance that she does but I see often how it becomes destructive.  For example, it was her perseverance that allowed her to earn her degree despite multiple setbacks and examination failures along the way but she did not give up until she earned her degree.  However, this same characteristic also causes her to sacrifice her own mental health and well-being to help someone who doesn't want to be helped.  She just can't let things go until her goal has been reached.  Seeing this growing up, I learned that despite being told that I need to persevere, there should be a limit, a time to give up.  I was involved with someone who kept stringing me along, and despite knowing it wasn’t healthy, I couldn’t let go. I kept pushing, trying to show how caring I was and hoping he’d see what he was missing. I also pressured him to give me a clear answer on whether he wanted to be with me or not. In the end, this persistence only caused me to develop mental health issues, leaving me miserable. Looking back, I realize I should have walked away much earlier. In my opinion, perseverance can be an amazing quality.  However, when trying to reach that goal, your own health starts to decline and it's starting to take over your entire life, it might be time to give up.   What signs might indicate that it’s time to stop pushing for something and let go?

Optimism

...See more We are always told to see the glass half full instead of half empty and that is the basis of optimism. However, it is alot more diverse and complex than just a simple metaphor. Optimism shapes the way we approach challenges and opporuntities. It is the ways in which we navigate the ups and downs of life. The course lists it as ‘Ability to sustain and communicate a sense of hope, positive attitude and confidence in the possibility of meaningful change.’ But how do we remain optimistic when life seems to not be going our way?  I have always found that optimism has driven my motivation to do better and see better. When we remain optimistic about our efforts it does often lead to success. It can also foster trust and cooperation in relationships as we help others believe in their own potential. Optimism is key in fostering and embracing the possibility of success, support, anf growth. It transforms our challenges into doors of success and allows us to face our darkest fears.  It is not to say that optimism and hope should not be used as interchangable terms. In your opinion what is the difference between hoping for something and remaining optimistic that something will happen? Aswell, how do you remain optimistic in your own life when things are not going your way.

...See more “You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor,” Aristotle. When I first saw courage as a skill, I immediately thought of this quote. I thought to myself that courage is needed in almost everything that we do in this world. It is defined as the ability to uphold one’s values, even when making difficult decisions and taking purposeful actions. Courage is needed to advocate for others and oneself, have difficult discussions and especially to forgive people who have hurt us. It is needed in day to day life to pursue our dreams, hopes and ambitions. Courage is often associated with being fearless and dramatic. However, it can sometimes look like quiet perseverance. This refers to maintaining your focus on your goals even in the face of setbacks. It can simply mean the courage to get out of bed in the morning and show up to where you are needed, although you feel emotionally drained, exhausted and inept. This in itself takes great effort, courage and strength. In order to do this, however, we may sometimes need to tap into our capacity for courage. That is, ways to feel more courageous. Here are three ways that I’ve found helpful when I needed to build my courage: Visualize myself as courageous- I tend to journal acts of courage that I performed in the past. For instance, speaking to large crowds or standing up for others. Creating a past inventory of courageous personal actions, no matter how small, tends to give me a psychological boost and helps inspire me. Step out of comfort zones- Engaging in activities that may be out of my comfort zone can build self-confidence and decrease fear associated with the activity. Clarify my values- Courage is easier to see in others than yourself. However, when we clarify our values, that is, what we stand for and what is important for ourselves, we may feel more capable of feeling more courageous and face what’s ahead despite the pangs of fear and anxiety. Let’s explore some open reflective questions. You are more than welcome to answer any or both: 🌱 What is one courageous action (no matter how small) you’ve taken recently? 🌱 What is one way you’ve found helpful when you needed to tap into your capacity for courage? ------------------------- Courage is one of the skills found in the fifth Dimension (Acting- Enabling Change) of the Inner Developmental Goals. Taking ACTION when you don't feel like it

...See more To make change in ones life, actually ACTING on what one desires is such an important concept. In my experience, it’s true that it does take courage, resilience, hope, and optimism. I’ve recently found that I shouldn’t wait for my feelings to change before taking action, but rather that by taking the action that my feelings end up changing positively.   I was recently unmotivated to work out. I set a goal that first thing in the morning I was going to do a short 15 to 20 min hitt workout 4 days a week, while listening to fun music. Now that I’ve been doing it for a few weeks, it’s turned into a habit and I’m actually feeling really good about it. Have you ever taken ACTION on something, despite not feeling totally ready/motivated? How did it work out for you?
