Values are fundamental beliefs and principles that guide our attitudes, behaviors, and decision-making. They play a crucial role in shaping our identities and influencing the way we interact with the world. It's fascinating how these values can transform throughout our lives due to a variety of factors.
Life experiences often serve as catalysts for changes in our values. These experiences can be both positive and negative. For instance, personal achievements, such as landing a dream job or achieving a long-term goal, can lead to a greater emphasis on values like ambition or perseverance. On the other hand, facing adversity, loss, or hardship can prompt a reevaluation of values, placing greater importance on qualities like resilience, empathy, or compassion.
Cultural exposure and diversity also contribute to the evolution of our values. Interacting with people from different backgrounds and belief systems can broaden our perspectives and lead to a deeper appreciation for values like tolerance, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity.
Moreover, as we progress through various life stages, such as adolescence, adulthood, or parenthood, our priorities and values often shift to align with our evolving responsibilities and personal growth.
Think of a value that you have now that you did not used to have, or one that has become more important to you. What life experiences led to this value changing? How does this change affect you now?
Please share your thoughts and experiences on how your values have evolved.
Reflecting on the evolution of our values can help us embrace change while cultivating the Being (Relationship to Self) Dimension of the Inner Developmental Goals.

Inspired by Lily's gentle nature and unwavering kindness in Animal Crossing, I affirm my commitment to cultivating inner peace and extending compassion to all. Like Lily, I choose to embrace the beauty in simple moments and nurture the connections that enrich my life. I recognize the interconnectedness of all beings and strive to live in harmony with the natural world, mindful of my impact on the planet, reflecting SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). I celebrate the unique qualities within myself and others, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected, contributing to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). I am open to growth and learning, embracing new experiences with curiosity and a spirit of continuous improvement, aligning with SDG 4 (Quality Education). Just as Lily brings joy to her island community, I aspire to contribute positively to the world around me, creating ripples of kindness and positive change, embodying SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).Considering Lily's approach to community building in Animal Crossing – her emphasis on kindness, inclusivity, and fostering well-being – how can you translate these principles into your own efforts to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in relation to the specific goals you find most meaningful, and taking into account the unique context of your own life, community, and the challenges and opportunities you encounter?

In a fast-paced, challenging, and ever-changing contemporary world, it can be difficult to fully see the complexity of situations. Numerous people usually consider situations to be either black or white, ignoring the various layers and the complexity of situations and human beings.
Complexity awareness calls for a deeper understanding that beyond what we see, hear, or know, layers exist that are yet to be explored.
Complexity awareness can be defined as an
‘understanding of and skills in working with complex and systemic conditions and casualties.’
The true beauty of complexity awareness resides in understanding that no matter how well we plan, there are always complex, unexpected elements that come into play. By considering the complexity of the situation, we know that we can let go instead of trying to control everything, which allows us to keep an open mind as we navigate situations. The existence of this gray area beyond the classic black and white allows us to judge situations differently and understand or relate to the choices of others, thus creating a better understanding between individuals.
* How can we foster our complexity awareness in our day-to-day life?
* Do you think that self-awareness is critical in fostering complexity awareness?

The Role of Critical Thinking in a Complex World

In a world filled with constant information, critical thinking has become more important than ever. It helps us analyze information objectively, recognize biases, and make well-informed decisions. Whether in academics, work, or everyday life, critical thinking enables us to solve problems, avoid misinformation, and approach challenges with logic and creativity.
However, critical thinking is not just about questioning others—it’s also about questioning ourselves. It requires us to reflect on our own biases, challenge assumptions, and consider different perspectives. Developing this skill takes practice, patience, and a willingness to change our views when presented with new evidence.
How do you challenge your own thinking?
Can you share an experience where critical thinking helped you make a better decision?

Utilizing Cognitive thinking in my life

I also found interest in the Thinking (Cognitive Skills) domain. This domain focuses on critical thinking, complexity awareness, etc. I think these two specific skills are important to our inner development. Even outside our inner development, we utilize these skills in our lives by communicating with others, in our classrooms, and much more. I believe I am utilizing critical thinking and complexity of awareness when I am supporting those around me here and in other places. When someone is coming to me about how their feelings and what going on I am doing a couple of things while listening. I am trying to understand their viewpoint and their family’s viewpoint if they share that with me. Additionally, I am trying to understand why what caused them to feel the way they do and how it has been affecting them lately. This helps me to become a better listener and I also use these skills for myself when I am going through my own harsh time or just simply learning about something. For example, when I am feeling hopeless or down I can openly listen to this negative view; I can even try to find evidence on whether it is true or not and I can understand how this negative view is affecting my life. It doesn't have to happen right in the moment of crisis, but I can do this when I am calmer or after I just experienced a bad moment. While the domain touches on much more than critical thinking and complexity awareness, I believe these two are very prevalent in my life.
What is one instance where you had to use your critical thinking skills? What did you do? And how did it go?

Long term orientation and visioning

Long-term orientation means thinking about our long term goals and the consequences of our current actions. This can help us decide on our short term goals AND make us more aware of our current behavior. It encourages us to change habits and avoid letting short-term benefits outweigh long-term consequences. One goal setting method I've loved learning about on here has been the SMART goal setting. And also the idea of needing to be ready to set goals for ourselves which can require some inner work first.
Visioning is one of the ways we can achieve long term orientation by picturing our ideal future so we can then figure out what steps we need to take to get there. One actionable way to do this could be through making a vision board or simply writing down your goals. An important piece of advice for this I'd recommend is researching! This can be a pain but honestly will (hopefully) make things easier in the long run as you can make informed choice AND can even discover options you'd never previously considered (which is something that I experienced in regards to my future career path).
I think that two main challenges I had with these skills are:
* The need for patience
* The fact that it can be very overwhelming to the point of procrastination and/or avoidance. What helped me deal with this was turning to my support system
I think these skills really help teach being purposeful i.e. taking control and responsibility which in itself is very empowering.
How do you like to envision your future? Vision boards, writing down goals? Do you follow any goal setting methods like SMART?
What's an everyday habit you've started to help achieve your long term goals?

Feeling acceptation

Self acceptance has always been a difficult subject for me. I tend to get into relationships where I'm the fixer, whether it's romantic, platonic, or just peer. I want to help someone and I often done the white scrubs of a clinical therapist and sit with one knee hooked over the other (even if it hurts after an hour).
That's all to say that I often have problems with being stifled. It's easy to nod and accept others, but recognizing your own boundaries can be difficult. My values and beliefs take such a back seat, I don't even look at them half the time! But it's not healthy to forget yourself so often. To ignore your feelings for the sake of others.
It comes as second nature to so many of us, but sometimes we treat ourselves so dismissively. This is a behavior I had to recognize and actively dwell over.
After a long day of listening to my family's struggles and woes, I sit down and journal. I made myself a rule to never journal about any one else's problems- to leave that for their own journals. Mine is for me. How do I feel? What are my goals? Did I have fun today? What did I succeed at? What are my plans tomorrow? It is important to accept ourselves and our feeling.
That's a form of mindfulness! It helps strengthen your relationship with yourself.
It's not selfish to say 'I'.
That's a hard fact to learn.
When you put your feelings on the back burner, we run the risk of it boiling over out of eyesight.
Don't forget to tend to them too.
🌼 What ways have you found to help you stay mindful and accepting of your own feelings?

I’ve always been deeply curious about life, people, and understanding the world around me. Growing up, I faced a lot of confusion about certain aspects of my life, and that search for clarity and self-discovery sparked a passion for psychology. It’s been a journey of not just finding answers but also finding myself.
💡 Learning the Hard Way
For much of my life, I struggled with critical thinking—not because I didn’t care, but because I saw the good in people without questioning whether they were trustworthy. It’s a beautiful trait, but it also left me vulnerable to difficult lessons. Over time, I’ve learned to pause, analyse, and approach situations with a more critical eye. Now, I embrace this balance of openness and discernment, which has transformed how I see and navigate the world.
📚 How I Keep Growing
Developing my cognitive skills has been a deliberate effort. I dive into books and immerse myself in psychology to better understand myself and others. It’s not just about learning; it’s about evolving into someone who can think critically, empathise deeply, and envision a meaningful future.
❤️ Connection Is Everything
For me, connecting with people means being vulnerable. And while that takes courage, it also brings immense joy and fulfilment. Deep conversations and resonating with others—sharing thoughts, experiences, and emotions—are truly my love language. It’s in these moments of connection that I feel most alive.
🌟 Let’s Connect and Grow Together
I’m here to share my journey, learn from yours, and build a space where curiosity, growth, and authentic connection thrive. If this resonates with you, let’s inspire each other to keep evolving. ⬇️
* What’s a lesson you’ve learned through self-discovery that has completely changed how you see the world or approach relationships?

Critical Thinking and Perspective

Perspective and critical thinking are both important qualities and practices. As someone who was born into a harmful group that discourages critical thinking, personal growth and seeking different perspectives, all of these are of utmost importance to me. I enjoy learning and considering different ways to look at the world and my own self. Learning for me is almost an obsession.
1. What are some ways you can practice and incorporate critical thinking and perspective understanding into your daily life?
2. How can these qualities aid your growth as a person?
1. Questioning assumptions one makes by asking questions is one way. Ask many, many questions. Don’t accept anything at face value—investigate. Be curious. Active listening, debate, consider different outcomes and results. Brainstorm multiple ways of solving problems. Communicating with others about perspective and critical thinking.
2. By practicing these, I am ensuring that my mind and, consequently, life is not narrow and static. There is constant improvement and expansion of the self and in thinking / problem-solving / relatability. Actively seeking out different perspectives and opinions provides a way to reflect on my thinking and where my mind is in terms of growth and learning mindset. Am I being narrow-minded and tunnel visioning? How do I feel about this particular viewpoint? Why? Is what they’re saying factual, or is it an opinion? What can I research about this? How does this affect my life? Etc.

🌟 Key Skills in the Thinking Dimension as per the course here include:
*
Critical Thinking: This isn’t just about finding flaws in arguments; it’s about evaluating information thoughtfully and making informed decisions. 🔍 Challenge yourself: Next time you read an article or watch the news, ask yourself: What evidence supports this claim?
*
Complexity Awareness: Life is rarely black and white. This skill helps us recognize the nuances in situations and understand that multiple factors may be at play. 🤔 Reflect: How can you embrace the gray areas in your life instead of seeking quick answers?
*
Perspective Skills: Everyone has their own lens through which they view the world. By seeking to understand contrasting perspectives, we can expand our own understanding. 👥 Think about: Have you had a conversation with someone who has a completely different viewpoint? What did you learn from that experience?
*
Sense-Making: This skill involves seeing patterns and creating stories from our experiences. It helps us connect the dots and make sense of our journey. 🛤️ Consider: What themes or lessons have emerged from your recent experiences?

The Importance of Critical Thinking in Decision-making

Critical thinking is a skill that has had a profound impact on how I approach problems and make decisions. In the IDG framework, critical thinking is described as the ability to review the validity of views, evidence, and plans. This means going beyond accepting information at face value and instead asking questions, analyzing the sources, and considering different perspectives.
One of the key moments when I realized the power of critical thinking was during a major life decision—choosing a career path. I felt overwhelmed by opinions from family, friends, and societal expectations. However, by applying critical thinking, I began evaluating the evidence behind the advice I was given. Was it based on current job market trends, or was it rooted in outdated beliefs? I also considered my own interests and long-term vision for my life. This process helped me feel more confident in my decision, knowing it was well-thought-out rather than influenced by external pressures.
In today's world, where we are bombarded with information from various sources, critical thinking is essential. It allows us to navigate through misinformation and make informed choices, both in our personal and professional lives.
Discussion Prompt:
- How do you practice critical thinking when faced with important decisions or overwhelming amounts of information?
- Have you ever applied critical thinking to challenge your own beliefs? What was the outcome?

Sense-making is interesting because it involves noticing patterns, I am sure many of you have noticed a pattern and then once noticed it is impossible to unsee. So many things that seem random are patterns. What patterns do you notice in your life? Are the patterns good or bad and why?
