Hi everyone!
Does anyone have any tips on where to begin with writing poetry? I used to love writing but I became pretty depressed and quit. It's something that I'd love to pick up again and I thought, "why not start with poetry?" Any advice is appreciated, thank you! ^.^

@CyberNymph7 Hello Cyber Nymph! First of all ... I just want to say that it’s amazing you are reconnecting with writing—especially after such a difficult time. Poetry can be such a powerful way to process emotions and express yourself, and there is no wrong way to begin. I am no professional when it comes to writing but a simple tip that might help-- start small and don’t overthink it. Try freewriting— just jot down whatever comes to mind without worrying about structure or rhyme. Even a single line or image that sticks with you is a great start. Reading poetry (even just a little!) can also spark ideas. Most importantly... be kind to yourself in the process. Writing again after a break can feel intimidating but every word you put down is a step forward💖
Also, feel free to post here on 7 Cups! We appreciate poetry in all forms— haikus, story-like poems, essay-style reflections, anything that feels right to you. If you're looking for a place to start maybe try using prompts to spark ideas. Cant wait to see your poems! (No pressure). Wishing you the best on your journey....!

Hello CyberNymph, I feel that @azurePond has given some excellent advice already. Her suggestion to read more poetry for inspiration is something I heartily subscribe to. Not only can in spark ideas but it also can give examples of literary tools that can help refine your own style. I would strongly recommend you also check out some of the pieces by @azurePond themselves as they are powerful examples of finely crafted poems, as well as mythos building. @ZenArashi is another poet whom I think is very much worth taking a look at, as they create very beautiful and serene pieces with elegant structure. There are of course many more excellent poems and poets both on this forum and beyond that merit a glance, so happy reading.
My own very unqualified suggestions would be to write about what is most important to you or what you feel most intensely. If you are passionate about something, it will very often reflect in how you write. If something inspires you, immerse yourself in it. Read out loud to yourself what you write to see if it scans as you want it to, and if it hits the emotional pitch you require. And do not be afraid to leave a poem for a while and come back to it at a later date, and try not to feel disheartened or frustrated if it does not come together straight away.
I look forward to seeing your poems, and wish you successful and satisfying writing.

I have a tip. Tag me and reply if you want to hear it.

Hello 👋🏼 I’m Zen and I applaud your keenness in writing poems again. I’d like to share a quote from Margaret Atwood, one of my favorite writers “If I waited for perfection, I would never write a word.” So just write, let the words glide from where you are at emotionally, even when it’s messy.
You have two excellent poets @AzurePond and @BastionKnight who have imparted their invaluable wisdom on poetry. There’s no right or wrong way in poetry writing, etch your own style, enjoy the process and give yourself grace. ✨
