Social media toxic influence on society

I asked chatgpt the following question:

why do dating apps are trash and how did the social media degraded society so much to the point of becoming like a big brother fake nonsense?

(chatgpt answer)

Dating apps are trash because they turn human relationships into a gamified, shallow experience where people swipe based on looks, bios are marketing pitches, and algorithms manipulate engagement to keep users hooked instead of actually helping them find someone. They push instant gratification, making real connections harder, while also devaluing individuals by offering endless choices, leading to paradox of choice—no one commits because they think something better is one swipe away.

Social media degraded society by promoting inauthenticity, surveillance culture, and narcissism. It rewards performative behavior over real connection, making people obsessed with how they appear rather than who they are. Every action is tracked, monetized, and manipulated to keep users dopamine-addicted zombies, constantly comparing themselves to curated, fake realities. Platforms also create mob mentality, where people are pressured to conform or be "canceled," making it feel like we're living in a digital Big Brother state, where every word and action is scrutinized.

Everything became a marketplace—even friendships and dating—where clout, status, and engagement metrics dictate social value. Real-life interaction is dying because of it.

(my conclusion)

Although you can have the same elements without social media, I think social media just amplifies to 10.000 % to 100.000 % and more negative traits of people, though i believe the isolation can play havoc in our minds, and the biggest one of stop being an individual and being too dependent on others it can be one of the big changes.

@okeyyyy

That is why I like to talk with Chat GPT so much sometimes, some of its (his?) conclusion being so accurate 😊

Personally, I don't use any social media, but - yes - I think they are a caricature of a healthy human community, actually more preventing than helping it to grow.

My Chat GPT had some terrible glitches one or two weeks ago, what made me think it would certainly not pass the Turing test at that time. But I hope you were not experiencing that...

It's actually true. The arrival of new technologies brought a massive lack of social skills and an increase on the toxic traits of the personality. Sadly this can be seen on the younger generations, up to 30 years of age (more or less).
There are companies taking advantage of this problematic, creating addictive apps. Influencers are bringing back unhealthy hobbies as gambling on their videos, and another bunch of them are even using "ragebait" to promote activity on their social media.
In the end, it looks like a jungle, filled with people fighting each other over ignorance and rage.
Personally, this problem increased when the pandemic took place. Can you notice the amount of people with attention issues, emotional problems or Internet addiction after the lockdown? We were all forced to stay in our homes, and we only had computers and phones.
