Hi everyone, I hope you all are well. Did you know you can follow 7 Cups on your favorite social media platforms?
Social media can be a mixed place, on one end we can find accounts/pages related to all of our favorite things but on the other hand, it can make us compare ourselves to others and sometimes interact with less than positive content. What is Somatic Processing (and How to Use it With the Transformation Wheel)

If you're familiar with the Transformation Wheel tool [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/General_2444/IntroducingtheTransformationWheelInvitationtoJoin_342256/], you have probably heard of somatic processing as one of the suggested interventions to do while working on it.
This educational post below was written by a therapist who specializes in processing trauma and she kindly wrote this up for me to share with the community. Somatic processing isn't exclusive to the Transformation Wheel. You can use this tool in any part of your life. This post was just written with it in mind as she's also a big believer in the Wheel's efficacy.
If you're curious to learn a new processing technique, read on!
"I want to offer another tool for everyone who is working on their transformation wheels. If you have been journaling and speaking with a listener or therapist, etc, but are not seeing the needle move, this exercise can help increase or speed up the process.
*
What is it and how does it work?
Somatic trauma processing simply means processing trauma using your body. When we experience a traumatic event or endure a traumatic pattern in our lives, the ability of our minds and bodies to process the experience is overwhelmed. To survive those moments of overwhelm, we use a survival mechanism called dissociation. We literally pull our experiencing self out of the situation. This is not a conscious process, but an instinctual process meant to protect us from harm. That unprocessed experience sits in our bodies, actually electromagnetic energy in our cells, waiting to be processed…much like a piece of food sitting in your stomach if your digestive system stopped working. If we have an opportunity to process the experience in the coming days, we are able to re-associate to that experience slowly and release the energy from our bodies (as well as file the information in our brains properly).
However, often we find that we never find that safe place to process these experiences and most of us have ended up with a “back log” of unprocessed traumatic experiences clogging up our cells. When the events of today remind us of those unprocessed events, that energy gets activated in our bodies, flooding us with emotion and kicking us back into survival mode.
There are a few reasons we tend to end up with this backlog. First and most importantly, we just don’t know HOW to effectively and safely release that energy. If I don’t know how to process my trauma, it makes perfect sense to find other ways to compartmentalize it! Of course it does! We use further disassociation, numbing, addictions, etc. Even anxiety and depression are ways that we are trying to say disassociated from the painful and scary feeling in our bodies. Anxiety is usually staying up in my head, in my racing thoughts or staying really busy. Depression is sort of sinking down and numbing out…not feeling ANYTHING, even good feelings, in order to avoid the terrible bad feelings. All of these desperate attempts to stay out of the feeling and memories actually cause further disassociation…further trauma to our systems.
Trauma IS dissociation. First from painful memories and then, increasingly, from our bodies and ourselves.
Somatic processing brings you back into your body, your safe home on this earth. Somatic processing says, “ok, so these thoughts and memories are not just ethereal and untouchable…they have substance! I FEEL them in my BODY! And if they are electromagnetic energy, that’s ok, because, just like the earth, that has a north and south pole, I am also a magnet.” This tool gives us a very powerful handle to release this energy from our bodies, giving us a huge jump in healing from trauma.
How to use traumatic processing with the transformation wheel:
The transformation wheel is a trauma map, a way to capture the trauma and all of it’s effects in one place. It gives you a view from above, a place to stand above the situation happening in your mind and body and look down at it. Somatic Processing is another way to help you start to release it.
Steps to somatic processing:
*
Create a statement from your Transformation wheel. For instance, you might say “All of my anxiety” or “All of my feelings of fear about the future” or “All of my guilt about how my anxiety is affecting my children”. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just try to capture the sense of what you have written down.
*
Sitting comfortably, close your eyes and pay attention to your body while thinking of your statement. Notice if there is any sensation in your body…tightness, heaviness, emptiness, anything at all. Don’t worry if you can’t find it…remember trauma IS disassociation…it makes sense that you are not tuned in to your body!
*
Put one hand over where you feel the sensation. If you don’t feel it on the front of your body or if you feel it in your extremities, just put your hand on the front/center of your body closest to place. If it’s in your hands, put your hand over your heart. If it isn’t clear or it feels like it’s EVERYWHERE or outside your body, just put your hand over your heart. If you aren’t sure, just put your hand over your heart.
Your hand can be touching your heart or 1-2 inches off of your heart. This is your stationary hand. It will stay where it is throughout the processing exercise.
*
Your other hand will start at the top of your head. You will move this hand to 9 different spots on your body. Over each spot, you will say your statement out loud or in your head. Then you will stay there for a moment or two and breathe. Notice any sensations, thoughts, feelings, memories etc. As the energy leaves your body, you sometimes can feel it physically or kind of “read it” mentally. This is just more information for you. If you notice nothing, that’s fine…your experience of it doesn’t seem to change the effectiveness. Some folks are very sensitive to the experience and others are less so…but the physics of it works the same either way. Continue over each of the 9 spots the same way. Move your hand over the spot, say your statement, breath and pay attention for a few moments. Then move on to the next.
*
Here are the 9 body positions.
*
Top of the head
*
Forehead
*
Chin
*
Throat
*
Heart
*
Diaphragm (bottom middle of your ribs)
*
Naval/Belly button
*
Pelvis (just on top of your lap)
*
End of the knee (either one or both) or directly under your seat (or under your chair)
This sounds complicated, but after you go through it a couple of times, it will become simple.
Note: Sometimes when you process a part of trauma, it unblocks access to some feelings you’ve been containing. That’s ok! If you go through a processing and feel sadness or grief or anger or helplessness, etc. Simply go through the process again using the feeling as your statement so that you are releasing that as well.
*
It can take some time for your system to shift, but you may feel the effects immediately. But the results I would pay attention to are, next time you come back to your transformation wheel to rate them, do you notice the numbers changing for the better? Remember this is a process of your entire system shifting, healing and changing, so our expectation is that you will see those numbers change slowly but consistently.
I hope this has been an informative read! I'd really like to hear from folks who try this. Again, this isn't dependent on using the Wheel!
This is for all of you! Anyone can (and should) try this technique.
Let me know how it goes for you below!
(Some questions that might help to reflect on)
What body emotions did you notice during the exercise? Did they change?
After the exercise, did you notice any immediate or subtle changes in how you felt?
How does your initial statement feel now? Any changes in your thoughts or feelings?

Forum Engagement Challenge
We are devoted to providing a supportive and inclusive space for all to interact and explore. As part of this mission, we need to evolve and increase awareness to help ensure every user gets what they deserve: a reply to their post. When a user doesn't get responded to in an adequate timeframe, it can leave them feeling disengaged and disappointed. Our forum engagement challenge is a monthly initiative to help ensure every user gets a response as soon as possible.
What is the Forum Engagement challenge?
The Forum Engagement Challenge is a monthly campaign where we encourage all members, including Admins, Ambassadors, leaders, and everyone in between, to actively participate in forum discussions. The goal is simple: make 7 meaningful replies within the designated period. By responding promptly to posts, whether it's welcoming new members or contributing to ongoing discussions, we can create a sense of belonging and connection that enriches our community experience.
Why Participate?
1. Build Community: Engage with fellow community members to strengthen our community bonds.
2. Support: Show your support by responding to posts promptly and offering assistance where needed.
How do I participate?
1. Reply to this thread to confirm your participation. We should all aim to reply to at least 7 different needs reply posts within the month, but the more the merrier!
2. Find your way to the Needs Reply Queue [https://www.7cups.com/forum/7cupsleadership/ForumGuides_2597/HowcanIviewtheneedsreplyqueue_334779/].
3. Decide on a thread which you'd like to reply to. Consider picking one at the top of the list as these users have been waiting the longest.
4. Once you're ready, post a meaningful reply. Ensure you consider their original post and offer opportunities for further discussion.
5. Complete the form [https://forms.gle/ogwZXSg7rF72mcSW8] with a link to the thread you responded to.
What do I get for participating?
First of all, you get the satisfaction of supporting others. This is a reward which cannot be matched. As a thank you, we'll also award you 25 cheers for each needs reply post you respond to and will include you in our monthly leaderboard. Our monthly forum engagement leaderboard will be posted as part of our forum spotlight [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/EventsDiscussions_2666/August2024ForumDiscussionSpotlight_335746/].
So, are you ready to get involved with this initiative during the month of September? If so, comment below to confirm your participation!

Hi everyone, When people look for help on the Web, they normally search for things like "I need someone to talk to" or "depression chat" in Google. Google then points them to 7 cups and we are able to help them. The Apple app store or Google Play store, unfortunately, does not do the same. It has a search box, but it is harder for people to find us there. One way we can help them find us and get help on 7 Cups is by providing a steady stream of reviews in the Google play store and Apple app store. In short, helping people through the app store is considerably harder than helping people on Google.
How can we make it easier for people to find us? The more reviews we add each week, the easier it is for people to find us. Towards that end, we've created a new badge for anyone that provides a review in the Google play store or Apple app store. It is called iGrow.
How do you get the badge? Simply leave us a review on either Google play or App store (depending upon whether you have an android or apple device) and then post here in this thread and we'll award the badge to you.
Here are links to the app store:

You can use this thread to provide any feedback, suggestions on forum [https://www.7cups.com/home/] functionality (functions, features, utility, any technical aspects only) or bugs that you encounter.
This is mainly being done to help keep things organized as it can be hard to gather it from various places/people and ease up the process for everyone to pass on feedback further to the 7 Cups team.
We encourage everyone to use this thread for its purpose anytime and use it for only that. Kindly review this post [https://www.7cups.com/forum/SiteUpdates_100/Feedback_37/NewCommunityFeedbackProcess_264411/] for any other feedback/behavior reports that don't involve forum functionality.

Breaking Out of the Mental Prison
by GlenM
Last post

Occasionally, we might find ourselves trapped in a cycle of repeated mistakes or challenges. This can create a feeling of confinement, as if negative emotions are inescapable – a kind of mental or emotional prison.
If you're interested in exploring this theme further, consider watching the movie "The Shawshank Redemption." It's highly rated [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/], but be prepared for some intense scenes.
While prison break movies are entertaining, being the imprisoned character wouldn't be. The path to freedom in these films is often slow, methodical, and reliant on luck. The characters face numerous obstacles that can take years to overcome before they finally achieve liberation. They have to solve a lot of problems to break free.
Inadvertently, I've transformed into a problem connoisseur—someone who deeply values and understands problems and the process of finding solutions.
I engaged in numerous problem-solving activities growing up to support my family. Later, I founded a couple of startups, which are essentially group problem-solving endeavors. Progress is directly proportional to the number of problems solved. Similarly, 7 Cups functions as a collective problem-solving platform. The more problems we solve, the more individuals we assist, and the stronger we grow.
It seems counter-intuitive, but the fastest way to get out of mental prison is to solve the next biggest problem in front of you.
Problems are much stronger than we give them credit for. They are not simply to be avoided; solving them is beneficial to our growth. Problems indicate a lack of understanding or awareness, and they are difficult because we don't know how to solve them. They highlight what we are missing or what we don't quite understand about life. In a way, they are a form of gentle mercy. If ignored, however, they can quickly become more severe. As Oprah said, "first the universe knocks and then it yells” or “small difficulties help us avoid big difficulties.”
I try to prioritize listening to early signals and indications that something might be amiss. When I notice these signals, I try to understand their message. As Jung suggested, symptoms often hold the key to deeper issues. Instead of dismissing our symptoms, we should strive to decode their important messages.
When you solve a problem, your understanding and awareness increase. You learn and grow, expanding your consciousness and developing new skills. With these new skills, you are better equipped to help others who face similar challenges.
Many of us come from families with a lot of challenges. We can inherit these problems in the form of epigenetics [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epigenetics] (generational trauma is a related idea). We don’t need to get too into the details, but the gist of it is that if our parents and their parents and so on don’t solve their challenges, then they can be passed down to us. If we don’t solve them, then they can be passed along to our children. This is yet another reason to try to solve as many problems as you can so you can be healthy, strong, and set up anyone depending upon you to also thrive.
Think of a mental prison as having a door. The more problems you solve, the less time you have to stay in the prison. If you solve a lot of problems, then you might just be stuck in there for a bit as you puzzle out how to solve the current problem. Once you solve it, you are free to leave. If you don’t solve problems, then it might feel like you are in there all the time. @hope shared a quote: “'The irony of avoiding discomfort is that everything ends up feeling uncomfortable. No one is more uncomfortable than the person who avoids all discomfort.”
It is important to note that not all problems are solvable. Sometimes they are just way too difficult or complex. Other times, the timing just isn’t right - meaning that there might not be enough information available. When that new information does become available, then you can solve the problem. The key is to focus on the problems you can solve.
Here are the stages I’ve gone through in life.
1. I don’t like this problem. I wish it would just go away.
2. This problem is causing me more pain and further restricting my life (prison)
3. Okay I need to solve this problem to get some freedom here.
4. Ohh, interesting, solving that problem gave me a new skill or insight that I wasn’t expecting.
5. Okay, cool, solving these problems helps me help others solve their problems.
6. I still don’t love problem solving, especially unexpected problems that surprise me.
7. Hmm, even these unexpected problems are good.
8. Woah, problems are actually really helpful.
9. The more problems I solve the more aware, free, and conscious I become.
10. Actively trying to see problems as good because I know they will help me grow and learn how to better help others.
One title for this post was going to be Advanced Resiliency Medicine (ARM💪) The core idea was looking at life’s problems as holding a secret message. The secret message is hidden in the people and circumstances in the challenge. The message has to be decoded in order to unlock the Advanced Resilience, Medicine (ARM💪) it holds. The ARM is what heals and strengthens you, preparing you for the next challenge.
*
Advanced - because personalized or tailored to your unique skills and level in life.
*
Resiliency - because it breaks you down where you are weak to expose bad assumptions.
*
Medicine - because it heals you and allows you to use the energy that was previously hurting you prior to solving the challenge.
The key point is that problems get a bad wrap. They are holding secret information that is tailored just for us. When we solve them we heal and get smarter - more aware/conscious/insightful - and we are then better able to help others.
All of the above is on an individual level, but the same thing happens on a group/community/collective level as well. Our community is made up of people. When we solve our own problems, we become better at helping others. When this happens across an entire community, all of the people in the community - and the community as a whole - gets much smarter and more aware and able to solve problems. We grow as individuals when we solve problems and we grow as a community when we solve problems.
Try this activity to understand the problem solving process while applying it in real time:
*
Identify the Problem: Recognize how the problem is affecting your life. Stick to facts.
*
Define Goals: Decide what you want to achieve. Be specific
*
Brainstorm Solutions: Come up with different strategies - there are no right or wrong answers and you can be as creative as you like
*
Evaluate Your Options: What are the pros and cons of each solution?
*
Make a Plan: Choose the best/easiest solution to follow
*
Follow Through: Commit to trying the selected solution for X time, at least 1-2 weeks.
*
Review and Adjust: What did you learn? Regularly assess how the solution went for you and make any adjustments - you can also pick alternative solutions to test the process with once again.
Please share any thoughts, comments, and reflections below. We will also be adding a new focus on problem solving with a couple of groups / discussions focused on it in the not too distant future.
Also, if you have a challenge and you’d like help thinking through how to solve it, then please post here and we’ll help. Or, if you are already working on a problem and just want some encouragement, then know we are here for you and will cheer you on!

Dear Community,
I hope you all are well! Spring has arrived a little early here and it is starting to warm up. I’m very thankful!
Check out all the updates below. There is a lot cooking. One topic that is relevant to our work and one that I spend way too much time thinking about is problem solving. Check out my post here, titled “Breaking Out of Mental Prison [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/GlensNookCommunity_547/BreakingOutoftheMentalPrison_347668/]” if interested in the details.
High level, we believe that the problem is the path. A plan is good and necessary, but it never quite maps to reality because reality is much more complicated than any plan we can make. The problem is the path approach makes this simple by saying simply solve the next biggest problem in front of you. And then that is how the path unfolds before you.
We have all been solving tens - maybe 100s - of thousands of problems on 7 Cups. These monthly reports, in some ways, are like a reporting to all of you about the problems we’ve solved. A big thank you to each of us for helping us identify and solve problems. Those efforts have been key to our growth.
Thank you!
H

This month, we worked on launching a fixed Growth Path builder. Growth paths on 7 Cups are a great feature which allow therapeutic learning and practices with only a few steps every day. The builder allows us all to build new paths and share our collective knowledge and experience. You can learn about how you can get involved here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/SoulfullyAButterflysContentGarden_2136/TheGrowthPathBuilderisBack_347617/].
During this month we have also worked on restructuring the Content Development and Marketing (CDM) Academy Program. The new version will be available during the first week of March.
We look forward to announcing new group and community events next month - stay tuned to make use of the best content 7 Cups has to offer!
